Turmeric and Two Smoothies

If you have not familiarized yourself with turmeric, it is time to make this golden spice your best buddy. Turmeric is the dried root of the herb plant called Curcuma Longa with the compound curcumin being the major active constituent and responsible for its yellow color. It has been lauded as the “golden spice of life,” a shiny reputation borne out of many promising scientific research over the past 30 years. It is shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, anti-atherosclerotic, anti-microbial, and wound healing effects which may help to ward off as well as treat many chronic inflammatory diseases. Smoothies are the easy-way-out to sneak turmeric into your diet. A steaming bowl of curry is ideal, but a luxury in a busy world. The recommended daily intake for ground turmeric is 1.5 grams, which amounts to about 1 rounded teaspoon. This may be divided over two or three doses a day. As tumeric is fat-soluble, in order to enhance its bioavailability and healthful effectiveness, take it with some fat or oil such as coconut oil, coconut butter or other nut butters.

Turmeric is also shown to be synergistic with black pepper, ginger and cinnamon. For example, a study conducted on humans showed that adding piperine to curcumin has been was able to increase serum levels and bioavailability by 2000 percent!

A short note on its taste. It has a peppery slightly tart taste and recipe-friendly. For smoothies I find ½ teaspoon to 1 ½ cups liquid the most I can handle at a time, any more is really quite potent and may induce stomach upsets – too much of a good thing.
